Take part in science-based training this fall.

How do you determine appropriate responses during potentially confrontational situations? The Force Science Institute has analyzed de-escalation and developed strategies that officers like you can use during tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving field encounters.

The League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust (LMCIT) is sponsoring workshops developed by the Force Science Institute that will teach you how best to handle critical situations while keeping both officers and the public safe.

During this day-long workshop, you will:

• Understand what de-escalation actually means and when it’s effective.
• Discuss the tactical principles of de-escalation, risk assessment, and decision making.
• Quickly determine whether de-escalation efforts are reasonable, practical, and likely to be successful.
• Efficiently recognize whether a subject is in conflict or crisis — and which strategies will be most effective to defuse the situation.
• Better ensure your approach and control strategies maximize response options and minimize unnecessary escalation.
• Balance the desirability of trying to resolve a conflict peacefully with the need to maintain officer and citizen safety.
• Recognize barriers to effective communication that officers commonly use unintentionally.
• Debunk myths about de-escalation that may jeopardize officer or citizen safety.
• Enhance your ability to make a connection, establish rapport, and apply effective principles of persuasion.
• Develop skills to assist investigators and others reviewing uses of force to recognize the pivotal situational and behavioral factors that must be considered when assessing whether de-escalation efforts might have been feasible and potentially effective.
• Explore ways to help community members and the media better understand what realistic de-escalation entails and the challenges that subjects may present that can inhibit, if not prohibit, an officer’s ability to safely de-escalate.

You’ll also learn critical Force Science concepts, including the “Response-ability Zone” and the “7 T’s De-Escalation Evaluation Model,” that you can use to evaluate tactics that are needed or likely to be successful in the de-escalation process.

Credits:

This workshop has been approved for eight total POST credits. You will earn four hours of conflict management/mediation credits and four hours of crisis intervention credits. Credit can only be given for the full day.

Presenter:

Joseph D’Amico, Major (Retired), Director of Training, Force Science Institute and Retired

Joseph D’Amico is an experienced and tested law enforcement trainer, senior law enforcement officer, and leader with almost 40 years of experience. D’Amico has successfully participated in and completed hundreds of law enforcement training courses and programs, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. For the last two plus years, he has worked as a consultant and now the director of training at the Force Science Institute (FSI). In his current position, D’Amico oversees the development of FSI training courses and ensures these course materials meet not only the high standards required by FSI but are also eligible for certification through the National Certification Program (NCP) of the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST).
