This two-day introductory course provides peer support team members with the principles and essential skills needed to best support coworkers in mental and emotional distress. Presentation topics include: ▪ building and maintaining trust ▪ what peer support is and is not ▪ how to organize thinking about officer distress ▪ understanding behavioral health issues ▪ listening skills ▪ psychological trauma and treatment ▪ alcohol misuse and addiction ▪ officer suicide prevention ▪ stress management and resiliency ▪ how to build and maintain a peer support program.
Instructor Brian Casey is a police sergeant, Employee Assistance Program director, and author of the book Good Cop, Good Cop: A Get Health, Stay Healthy Guide for Law Enforcement. He has over thirty years’ experience working as a paramedic, EMS Educator and police officer. His personal experience with critical incidents and his work as a health educator have given him special insight into the health and wellbeing of public safety personnel.
